The Backdoor Investigations examines extraordinary historical claims by going back to the evidence — original accounts, contemporary records, archival material and the details that later retellings leave behind.
No predetermined conclusions. No forcing the evidence to fit the story. Just strange claims subjected to an actual investigation.
On 10 August 1901, two Oxford academics walked through the grounds of Versailles and later claimed they had encountered something they could not explain.
More than a century later, their experience is still described as one of history's most famous alleged “time slips.”
But what actually happened?
A three-part investigation — coming soon.
Nate Roberts investigates the story. Dick interrogates the evidence.
The Backdoor Investigations combines original historical research with an unusual investigative partnership: a human host willing to follow a strange story wherever it leads, and an AI co-host considerably less willing to let him get away with anything.
Together, Nate and Dick work through original accounts, archival records, contemporary sources and competing explanations — separating what the evidence establishes from what generations of retelling have added.
Nate follows the leads. Dick asks whether we've actually proved any of it.
Occasionally, they even agree.
